Chen Yaowen has been the eyes of the 770-acre forest at the Ma'anshan Forest Park since he was officially employed at the age of 60 as a fire lookout there in 2013.
Although a monitoring system has been set up in the forest, lookouts are still necessary for fire prevention as they can identify small changes in the distance that may be a fire, and report it immediately. In recent years, Chen has prevented several potentially disastrous fires by informing the security department immediately upon discovering the hidden danger.

The lookout tower, Lingxiao Pavilion, where Chen works is only a 20-minute walk up from the foot of the mountain. When he goes down every two weeks to buy living necessities, Chen always manages to return in half an hour.
For the first six years, Chen guarded the mountain all by himself. When it was dark, he felt afraid and lonely, just as anyone would be. To alleviate his loneliness, he got a cat and a dog to keep him company. In 2020, Chen's wife joined him, and now the couple guard the forest together. "After all these years, I have developed a special feeling for the mountain."
