Wuhan-based enterprise builds bridge for Bangladesh | 在汉央企为孟加拉国造“梦想之桥”

  The Padma Multipurpose Bridge in Bangladesh, after eight years of construction by the Wuhan-based China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd., opened to traffic on June 25.
  6月25日,经过近8年建设,由在汉央企中铁大桥局承建的孟加拉国帕德玛大桥公路正式通车。
  Located about 40 kilometers southwest of the capital Dhaka, the 21.5-meterwide, 6.15-kilometer-long bridge has two levels. The upper tier is a four-lane highway with a designed speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour, while the lower tier is a single-track railway line.
  帕德玛大桥位于首都达卡偏西南约40公里处,主桥长6.15公里、宽21.5米。桥梁上层双向四车道公路,设计时速每小时100公里,下层为单线铁路。

  The construction was much more difficult than expected. "The over-150m-deep riverbed is composed of silt and has an extremely low bearing capacity," said Shen Tao, deputy general manager of the project. Whenever the flood season approaches, the river in the main channel is turbulent and the channel is often affected by silt, causing constant alteration of the riverbed. As well, all the material and equipment needed for the project had to be shipped from China to the construction site.
  大桥的建设难度超乎想象。“帕德玛河的河床都由粉砂组成,深度超过150米。承载力极低。”该项目副经理沈涛介绍。每到洪水期,主河槽河流湍急,施工航道经常受回淤影响,河床不断变化。而项目所需材料和设备,都要从国内跨洋运输到现场。
  The construction of the bridge has led to the development of the surrounding area. When the project began in 2014, the place was desolate with only rivers and beaches and nothing else. But now, factories and gas stations have been built on the north bank of the river and the locals' life quality is constantly improving.
  项目施工多年,也带动了周围的发展。2014年刚开工时,项目旁只有空荡荡的河面和岸滩,现在河北岸新建了工厂、加油站,周边居民的生活也越来越好。
  Linking 21 districts in the southwest of the country to the capital Dhaka, the bridge slashes travel time from seven or eight hours to as little as just 10 minutes.
  大桥通车,孟加拉国西南部21个区与首都达卡相连,原本七八个小时过河时间缩短至10分钟。
