When Yiyi, a 7-year-old girl from Wuhan, suddenly became a paraplegic, she persisted in rehab training and never once gave up. Just over a year later, her ongoing recovery is inspiring others.
On July 31, 2021, an unexpected car accident robbed Yiyi of her carefree childhood. Doctors told her parents: "She will not be off the ventilator for the rest of her life." The family did not give up and went to the Rehabilitation Medical Center of Wuhan No.1 Hospital, hoping that Yiyi would gradually return to a normal life through rehabilitation therapy.
Yiyi and her picture "Little snail"
Tan Dazhou, a therapist, said Yiyi couldn't do a single push-up her first time even with the help of tools. However, she never thought about giving up, and she took a rest only when she was exhausted. After two months of training, she could do 200 push-ups in 10 minutes. Her hands were wrapped in thick bandages every hour or so to improve the tension of the muscles in her hands. Even though her hands were covered with bruises every time she took them off, she never complained of the pain.
Yiyi has continued the training for over a year. She has gone from being on a ventilator and wearing a neck brace to slowly coming off them. Gradually, she has miraculously been able to eat food and even draw with her hands.
Recently, Yiyi painted a picture called "Little snail." The news of this miracle has spread from the children's rehabilitation ward. Her painting has been put on display. Her family and volunteers in the medical rehabilitation department hope that the painting will inspire more people.
