Senior high third-grader claims asteroid |
A main belt asteroid discovered by Xiong Jiarui's group at the No.1 Middle School Affiliated with the Central China Normal University was recently confirmed by the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center. According to the regulations of the center, Xiong's group will have the naming right for this asteroid. Xiong is a third-grader in senior high school who fell in love with astronomy in his childhood. He has been selected twice as a member of the national training team for the Astronomy Olympiad.
The discovery of the asteroid has its origin with the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) project. After joining the project, Xiong received observation data and then proceeded to use computers to help eliminate most of the extraneous targets. Afterwards, he manually compared the remaining objects with those in official star charts.
Certificate for Xiong
It was a time-consuming job. "We spent a month of after-school time in the search," said Xiong. In the future, Xiong plans to go into astronomy or theoretical physics in order to continue his love of "chasing stars."
