In preparation for the imminent Spring Festival travel rush, considered the world's largest annual human migration, more than fifty maintenance centers for high-speed trains are working hard to guarantee a safe journey for Chinese passengers. Our reporter Huang Yichang visits one of the centers, in Central China's Wuhan, to learn about what happens behind the scenes.

Rows of radiant light stripes, and a vessel shaped design.

This sight may look like a land-based aircraft carrier, but it's actually a maintenance center for high-speed trains. Rows of the vehicles are neatly lined up, all in preparation for the busy travel season.

HUANG YICHANG Wuhan "Today I'm taking a look at how these bullet trains are taken care of to guarantee safe travel."

It's 11:00 O'clock in the evening, and the trains are visible on the way back.

HUANG YICHANG Wuhan "When a 400 meter-long train finishes work for the day and arrives home, guess what the first thing it does is? Take a shower!"

Take a look at the big brushes set in motion, similar to how cars are washed. But you can barely see any people on duty at the site because they operate the system behind the scenes, from a warmer location.

ZHANG XUAN Deputy Director Hankou High-Speed Train Operations Workshop "This car wash system is fully automated, and we monitor the machine's actions in real-time from the backend. Additionally, our system uses recycled water, making it an environmentally friendly approach to car maintenance."

Given the washing machine mainly cleans the sides of the train, when it arrives at the workshop, the front section requires manual cleaning.

That's when you can spot the rhythm of body movements along the carriages. It's not exactly a dance, just the usual daily check-ups. And it's clear they mostly rely on their bare hands and eyes.

ZHU WENJIN Mechanical Technician Wuhan High-Speed Train Maintenance Center "For ordinary trains, tools like hammers are used to tap and listen to determine if there are any loose parts. But for the more advanced high-speed trains, if a screw is loose it's detected by pushing or twisting it by hand, or making sure the lines are properly aligned."

Zhu says with such skilled body movements, more than ten thousand screws and other components under the train can be inspected inside just forty minutes.

Venturing deeper into the maintenance center, there are also train "doctors," as they're commonly called, conducting health-checks on the so-called "legs" of the train.

The main parts of the train, such as the wheels, need to undergo an "ultrasonic" test. And it looks similar to an ultrasound of the human body, right?

MAO KE NDT Worker Wuhan High-Speed Train Maintenance Center "Indeed, it's just like an ultrasound at the hospital. Without causing harm to the object being examined, the ultrasonic waves allow non-destructive testing, specifically inspecting the train's wheels and axles. However, this type of testing isn't part of our routine maintenance. Think of it as the equivalent of a major tune-up for a private car. For high-speed trains, a secondary maintenance session like this is done every hundred-thousand kilometers."

Another crucial step – cleaning the ventilation system, the equivalent of lungs in the human body. The air filters need to be cleaned or replaced by "lung" doctors to make sure the air inside the carriage remains fresh.

Compared to everyday maintenance, secondary maintenance of this kind is often more time-consuming. So train depots are making every effort to ensure an increased supply of the trains during the travel season.

LI JUNPING Engineer, Wuhan High-Speed Train Maintenance Center "To meet the demand for trains during the Spring Festival travel rush, we've made adjustments to the maintenance schedule. We've proactively conducted secondary maintenance on trains in advance, ensuring that it doesn't affect the deployment of train sets."

After a night of care by people in different positions, a fleet of high-speed trains, having undergone a full "recharge," are ready to embark on new journeys, taking people back home.
